GIS & The Kentucky ITEST Program
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Authors: Audrey Long

With the help of a grant from the NSF, students and teachers across Kentucky have, for the past two years, been using GIS technology to explore their communities. With diverse topics such as water, wetlands, soil, and invasive/native species, students have been able to use GIS technology in ways they previously couldn't understand. This presentation will allow students and teachers to share not only their work with conference participants, but also to discuss how to implement GIS instruction in middle and high school classes. By discussing both the successes and challenges they faced, the presenters hope to inspire others to find new and exciting ways to use this technology while avoiding some of the roadblocks that can lead to uninterested students and frustrated teachers.
