Power of Data Project - Science Teacher Training in GIS
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Authors: Lori Hare, Mark Manone

I will share the successes, challenges, and results of Harnessing the Power of Data Project, designed to increase the science, technology, and math skills of secondary students through professional development for teachers. Training was provided for a team of one secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) and one mathematics or science content teacher per school. Over seven weekend institutes, participants learned geology content, pedagogy and GIS skills to implement two problem-based learning modules utilizing geospatial technologies. Between institutes, teams implemented the modules with an Earth science focus in their classrooms and guided students to collect and analyze their own data to solve a local problem. The students used a GIS to find and create supporting evidence for their solutions and to communicate their ideas. Participants examined the effectiveness of the modules on the learning and science and technology efficacy of students and reflected on their experiences with implementing GIS.
