Abstract![]() Facilitating a new cross-institutional MSc GIS in New Zealand Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education Author GIS education in New Zealand is about to take a giant leap forward with the development of a new cross-institutional MSc in GIS, involving academics from Canterbury, Victoria, Otago and Auckland Universities. The proposed degree, which is due to commence in 2011, aims to attract students from across the world and provide New Zealand with a unique educational programme in GIS. In developing the programme, many technical barriers are being hurdled, and new pedagogical approaches are being advanced to support a mix of teaching methods including intensive residential courses and teaching across the web. This presentation reviews the current state of GIS education in NZ, presents an outline of the new programme and discusses the pedagogical approaches that will be taken to run this new programme.
