GIS/GPS: Changing the Way Teachers Teach
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Authors: Susan Flentie, Kala Flentie

GIS can be a useful tool in the classroom and when combined with service-learning, provide important services to our communities. These activities provide real-world research experiences for students in many curriculum areas.
A community service learning project was adopted by our Lewistown Junior High School GIS Club to enhance their GIS / GPS skills. Working with community partners, they embarked on several mapping projects including an Educational Interpretive Trail Map. They also utilized their skills to teach adults about GIS / GPS in a community education class.

These students have gone on to high school where they challenged their teachers to learn about GIS. As a result in the summer of 2009, 21 local teachers and administrators participated in a Geospatial Learning workshop and are currently developing geospatial lessons. Geospatial technologies are now being used throughout the school district in grades 5-12 to enhance the curriculum in many subject areas.
