Finishing the Geospatial Technology Competency Model
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: David DiBiase

By the time the 2010 Esri User Conference convenes in San Diego, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM) should be complete. The document has been in the works since 2001. It is the product of a process meant to identify the knowledge, skills and abilities needed by workers throughout the geospatial industry and within each of its industry sectors. Unlike the GIS&T Body of Knowledge, the GTCM is not limited to domain-specific expertise. Instead it identifies a holistic set of competencies that range from personal to technical. Unfortunately, consensus has been elusive about the nature of the industry and the know-how it requires. At the 2009 Esri EdUC I presented the National Geospatial Technology Center’s rationale and plan for helping finish the DoL’s GTCM. This year I propose to describe how our plan played out over the past year, and to share the results.
