GIS as General Education: Geospatial Literacy for All
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Ken Yanow

At Southwestern College, our Introduction to Geographic Information Science and Spatial Reasoning class fulfills a number of General Education requirements (for both the Associates degree and the Baccalaureate degree). With GIS as a general education course, two major results have occurred: 1) We have seen an increased enrollment in our certification program; and 2) We are increasing the geospatial awareness and critical thinking skillset of students from across the disciplinary spectrum. Our curriculum utilizes both freely available Internet geospatial resources (such as Google Earth and the National Atlas) as well as Esri ArcGIS (delivered virtually from our Server). At this presentation, we will introduce our course, describe how we acquired 'GE' status, and we will make available our course outline and online geospatial learning modules.
