GIS in a Camp Setting for Middle School-aged Youth
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Authors: Megan Patent-Nygren, Bradley Barker, Kathleen Morgan

GIS is a natural fit for a camp targeted at middle-level learners. Either as a stand-alone camp or as a part of an existing camp, GIS can be a tool to get youth moving outside, explore their environment, provide a community resource, interact with local leaders and explore STEM careers. This presentation will include free, available curriculum, sample schedules and recommendations for hosting a GIS camp and is led by presenters that have hosted camps with 10 to nearly 100 youth in diverse settings.

GEAR-Tech-21 is a National Science Foundation-funded program available nation-wide integrating GIS, GPS and robotics. Youth explore through building and programming a robot, geo-tracking, navigation and mapmaking activities. Leaders have step-by-step guides and training provided. It is real learning with real adventures!
