Keeping Your Course “Cutting Edge”
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Rachel Kornak

According to Wikipedia, “A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them.” Incorporating Web 2.0 applications such as Esri’s ArcGIS Online, Drupal, YouTube, and JingProject into your online GIS course can provide many benefits including facilitating group interaction and class participation, reinforcing complex spatial concepts, and providing real world examples of applications of GIS. During this session we will discuss lessons learned while modernizing Geography 487 to incorporate cutting edge tools, techniques, and data formats and migrating the course to an open source environment. Environmental Applications of GIS (Geography 487) is offered as part of Penn State’s online Master of GIS/Certificate program, one of the nation's top-rated graduate programs in GIS.
