The Geospatial Technology Education Initiative - Free for Schools
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Authors: Stewart Bruce, Chuck Benton

The Geospatial Education Technology Initiative (GetIT) is a free program for K-12 schools that has been designed to provide a comprehensive package of geospatial technology curriculum hosted in a Moodle virtual learning environment. The core curriculum is a four-semester technical education program that focuses on the use of ArcGIS Desktop, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, ENVI EX, and some other related geospatial software programs. Lessons are individual Moodle modules and may be rearranged to suit any number of STEM related disciplines in those cases where teachers may not have the time to devote a full semester to the teaching of ArcGIS. Additional modules have been developed for specific inclusion into STEM related classes to teach students how GIS may be applied to these disciplines. Washington College (MD) and Dover Area School District (PA) will co-present on the lessons learned with using Moodle to teach ArcGIS at the high school level.
