Mayor's Youth Technology Corps an NSF-ITEST Program in Detroit
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Authors: Margaret Jolin, Randall Raymond

A unique collaboration between Eastern Michigan University Institute
for Geospatial Research and Education, Detroit Public Schools and the
City of Detroit Department of Homeland Security and Emergency
management enables Detroit Public High Schools students with training
in GIS and related geospatial and information technologies. This
presentation will
highlight many of the successes of this program that operates out of
two different DPS Career Technical Centers and two different high
schools, Cody and Henry Ford. It also will present the challenges
related to the need to use three different training styles to properly
accommodate the students. Further discussion will involve how to
successfully connect online student learning with the Esri Virtual
Campus Learning Pathways program. The successes and challenges of
preparing the MYTC students for paid intern experiences with various
City of Detroit Departments will be included.
