High School Students Earn College Credit Completing Geospatial Projects
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Authors: JONATHAN PRUESS, Trent Tillman

A dual-enrollment Geospatial Technology course, in collaboration with James Madison University, has become an adopted Loudoun County Public Schools course after three pilot years. The course is a rigorous year-long Arc-GIS-based offering for high school juniors and seniors. The first semester is dedicated to ArcGIS and GPS skill building activities, followed by realistic guided projects utilizing real data, and requiring students to solve spatial problems and make spatial decisions. The second semester is devoted to independent student-generated geospatial projects, culminating in deliverables presented to Heritage High School and James Madison University faculty. Example student projects will be shared, including a presentation by a second-year student using ArcMap and ArcScene to identify off-grid schools in remote communities that could benefit from micro-hydroelectric systems, on the island of Mindanao, Philippines.
