Government organizations and municipalities are known as enterprises using various brands of GIS software in their departments. Depending on historical developments and sometimes on the tasks it is usually impossible to migrate to solutions based on core products of one vendor, e.g. Esri, even if there are related applications available. Such organizations can realize benefits by introducing data interoperability in a way that enables direct access to original up to date data which is maintained by the responsible departments. Possible solutions are Web Services or direct access to data in spatially enabled RDBMS.
The presentation shows, how ArcGIS desktop can be used as a thick client for GIS specialists in an environment with data maintained by other departments using other GIS products from other vendors. It is based on research work at HFT Stuttgart with data from the German state Baden-Württemberg. Essential agreements and settings will be pointed out.
