Workflow for developing, managing, and delivering GIS curriculum content
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Don Boyes

The development of course material for a GIS curriculum can result in the creation and collection of thousands of PowerPoint slides, shapefiles, geodatabases, maps, models, images, and URL’s. Developing a systematic and organized workflow that takes advantage of a variety of software can make content development and management more efficient and, more importantly, aid in more effective teaching. A typical workflow used to create a new teaching module will be discussed, including identification of key concepts, functions, and data sources, and the creation of maps, models, and images (including optimizing ArcGIS map figures in PowerPoint). Finally, a method for organizing this new curriculum content will be shown that makes it easy to access and update material for lesson design and use.
