Building Capacity for 4-H Geospatial Learning in New York State
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Authors: Charles Malone

Geospatial Science is a fast growing technology. It affects the lives of people daily. Although there is a greater awareness of how ubiquitous this technology is for all segments of society, including the work place, agriculture, the market, and government, there is still a great need to include this in both formal and non-formal educational systems to prepare youth to understand the science and its potential in local and world communities. New York State 4-H has offered Geospatial Science Project opportunities over the last five years. Leadership and program resources are in place. There is now an increasing need to build capacity in the areas of Volunteer training, and recruitment of community resources, including workplace and industry volunteers. New York has a pilot two-day, hands-on certification training program titled 4-H Geospatial Volunteer Corps. It incorporates youth & adult partnerships to expand geospatial learning opportunities throughout the community.
