Lessons learned with 4-H community service projects
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Authors: Frank Wideman

Each year the national 4-H GIS/GPS leadership team organizes a project that can serve as a model for the Esri User Conference attendees can take back home to share and teach to 4-H geospatial project groups in their community and state. Last year we teamed with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The year before our partner was the San Diego Animal Shelter and Humane Society. The year before that we worked with the National Park Service at the Cabrillo Monument. Each time we worked with the partnering agency to design a GIS experience that served the needs of that partner and provided a viable project for the 4-H youth. Each year we had big rewards and good experiences. We also had a few pitfalls. We will share those experiences to help others gain those rewards, and maybe avoid some of the pitfalls.
