Evaluation Strategies to Measure Program Impact
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Authors: Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black

Evaluation is a necessity in guiding the development of a program as well as determining if program objectives were met. The evaluation provides a scientific basis for determining the impacts that the program made on participants. The results from a youth development geospatial technology program designed to benefit communities in hurricane ridden states will be used to guide participants through the program evaluation process. The sample evaluation plan from the 3-day training provides examples of short, medium, and long-term evaluation strategies. Both quantitative and qualitative procedures will be presented. In addition, session participants will learn how a retrospective survey approach was used to measure immediate and long-term program impacts. Examples of the survey instruments used, report findings, and theoretical citations will be provided.
