Determining Land Cover Classification for the St. Louis River Watershed
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Elizabeth Sedgwick

Within the Tribal College system, programs focusing on geospatial technologies represent a small subset of the programs of study that are offered to students. To this point, the resources and training opportunities available to faculty for the purpose of professional or program development are limited and often require time and staffing commitments that preclude single-faculty departments from participation. Providing students with a tangible experience in coursework enhances the student learning experience. The NSF-funded iGETT project afforded faculty one such opportunity for professional and program development with the deliverable of a lesson relevant to each selected participant’s geographic region.

Remote sensing students at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College complete a land cover classification for the St. Louis River watershed utilizing the Learning Unit developed during participation in the iGETT project. This allows for an on-going assessment of the health of this local watershed with cultural relevance and economic significance.
