Landsat for K-12: Advances in Technology; Challenges for Innovators
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Authors: Jeannie Allen

Remote sensing images and data have become commonplace. No-cost Landsat data from 1972 to the present time can be downloaded by anyone at no cost and can be integrated with GIS for a multitude of problem-based investigations. Community colleges are beginning to incorporate remote sensing into their GIS programs, encouraged by the iGETT program. K-12 students and teachers have proven they can understand and analyze Landsat images and datas. How can we most effectively leverage the iGETT experience to put this capability into the hands of more K-12 educators, and how can it be integrated with existing STEM disciplines to meet stringent classroom requirements? This session will feature some of the best resources for learning and teaching with Landsat; lessons learned from iGETT; and a discussion of dreams, obstacles, and recommendations for integrating geospatial technology into the K-12 classroom.
