AbstractDam Failure: Analysis of Potential Flood Elevations and Economic Losses Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education Author This instructional module was developed for the NSF-funded iGETT project (Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training). Students develop baseline data for a community emergency preparedness and response plan by defining potential flood elevations, risks and economic losses due to a catastrophic breach of a large, multipurpose dam. GIS and ENVI software integrate census blocks, city parcels, TIGER, LULC, FIRM, DEM, satellite imagery, NAIP imagery, CLU, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood data. Analyses include determining market value, LULC, location of high-risk populations, hazardous sites/structures, emergency/critical facilities able to operate, and potential evacuation routes and shelters for the flooded area.
