Abstract
GIS Concepts in Stream Restoration and Wetland Riparian Management
Track: Teaching with GIS Across the Curriculum
Authors: Kevin Fochs
Students in Park High and Sleeping Giant Middle Schools in Livingston, Montana, have conducted various studies on Fleshman Creek, including aerial imagery, water quality parameter, weed-mapping, population studies, landowner mapping, and cultural resource inventory utilizing GIS as a platform for spatial data distribution. GIS provided a means by which to compare weed control methods, storm drain inputs, and multitudinous values in ways that informed student recommendations on local policy. For example, students demonstrated that grazing sheep reduced weed density to a greater extent than did mechanical or chemical methods. Information about this project may inform similar ones in communities around the country.
