The value of assessment rubrics to support student learning is well established in the general and engineering education literature. However, focus in the literature is on undergraduate education and/or capstone project work. Little or no discussion exists on rubric development for mapping projects and/or in continuing education settings. This paper describes a methodology for introducing detailed Body of Knowledge (BOK) defined skills into a rigorous instructional design process in order to develop such rubrics. The outlined process insures the proper connections between a BOK, learning objectives, instructional materials, assessment, and competency attainment. A series of rubrics are developed utilizing the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping's GIS Micro-Level Body of Knowledge (ACSM-BOK) in conjunction with relevant aspects of the AAG Geographic Information Science & Technology BOK that was utilized in the development of the ACSM-BOK.
