Abstract
Target Everyone: Expanding your audience with the JavaScript API
Track: Teaching About GIS for Future Professionals

Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, Researchers at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania (Bodzin, et. al.) are developing curriculum enhancement activities that use web-based geospatial technologies to promote spatial thinking among middle school students. As schools expand the use of technology in the classroom, student access to e-learning tools continues to grow and now includes an almost endless configuration of mobile devices, operating systems, and learning applications. Esri's JavaScript API provides a mapping solution that is not dependent on a particular device, operating system, browser, or plug-in. The flexibility of the JavaScript API allows the researchers to create custom queries and tools that challenge the students to investigate various spatial datasets. The integration of standard HTML content allows researchers to include additional instruction that walks students through various geospatial activities. The integrated dojo controls help to create a contemporary and easy-to-use interface.
