Abstract
USC Beta Tests Esri's ArcGIS Server "Campus Edition" Online Courses
Track: Teaching About GIS for Future Professionals
Authors: Jennifer Swift
"Campus editions" of Esri's Instructor-led courses "Introduction to ArcGIS Server" and "Creating Effective Web Applications using ArcGIS Server" were beta-tested in a graduate Web GIS class within the USC online GIST program. Each student was provided with a virtual server over which they had complete administrative control. GIST IT staff created a core server with a full suite of ArcGIS server, SQL Server and other required software, which can be replicated into individual student virtual servers on demand. The Esri course documentation and data provided a strong foundation for the teaching materials needed in the ArcGIS Server section of the Web GIS class. This was an excellent learning experience for students and Esri's materials were extremely helpful for USC faculty and staff. Students were sufficiently satisfied with their acquired ArcGIS Server knowledge that most decided to complete their final class projects using ArcGIS Server rather than alternative open source solutions.
