Abstract
Tracking Student Migration: Using GIS to Facilitate Dialogue
Track: Administration and Policy
Authors: Joshua Rosales
GIS was used to give a visual representation of the migration of students between two locations within the community college district. It was found that, while students enrolled at both locations lived throughout the area, they were more likely to begin their education at the closest location. Yet, once they started at the second location, they were more likely to continue to use the second location. Further inspection indicated a slight preference by Hispanic students to attend one location over the other despite it being in an area that was 70% Hispanic by population. The results of this project have helped foster dialogue and have implications for outreach, course offerings, and staff development.
