Abstract
Bridging Academic Silos: GIS as an Integrative Tool in Universities
Track: Administration and Policy
Authors: Bruce Hunter
The Department of Geography within the University of North Texas has used GIS since 1989, yet efforts to implement the technology for administrative and operational units have been unsuccessful until recently. Today, GIS projects that address various educational and strategic goals are sprouting throughout the organization, fostering stronger interdisciplinary and interdepartmental bonds. The multi-faceted capabilities of GIS enhance many new and existing initiatives such as interdisciplinary research, risk assessment, facilities management, transportation, logistics, student recruitment, alumni partnership and sustainability. And at the core of this campus-wide adoption of GIS lies opportunities for enriched student education beyond the classroom.
