Abstract
Building Your School Geo-Database from Scratch
Track: Teaching About GIS for Future Professionals
Authors: Alaa Shams, Brandy Tyson-Polk
Currently Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) does not have a detailed campus map to aid students, professors, and visitors while visiting campus. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how your GIS students can help you build and collect the campus infrastructures through a class room exercise, with the final product being a detailed BRCC campus map. This map could also be used to aid in future campus expansion, parking, and facility management. Furthermore, this project will show how you can develop a class room exercise to deliver the concepts to students and how to provide hands-on activities that can be used in real life to produce a product through a complete project life cycle. We will talk about the methodology, time management, the learning curve, and other constraints that students can face, as well as how they can overcome these problems to finally print and present their data.
