Abstract
Does GIS Impact Students' Spatial Thinking Skills?
Track: Teacher Education and Educational Research
Authors: Bob Kolvoord, David Uttal
In this presentation, we will share results from our ongoing research on the impact of geospatial technologies on students' spatial thinking skills. Working with students in James Madison University's innovative dual-enrollment Geospatial Semester project, we have been conducting video case studies and interviews with participants in the semester- or year-long GIS-focused course. We have been analyzing the video for the students' use of spatial language and gesture and we will present results of our work, along with representative video clips of student interviews and classroom work. We will conclude the session by discussing future research directions and soliciting feedback on this effort from members of the audience.
