Ineffective management and poor administration of schools are fundamental problems facing educational system in Nigeria. To improve the poor standard, this study employed GIS to create a geodatabase for 114 schools located within Oye Local Government Area, Nigeria. To develop such a system, the study mapped the spatial distribution of the schools and the attribute data was generated from a structured questionnaire. The resultant maps indicated that schools were clustered along major roads with over 70% located within a buffer zone of 1000m from the roads. The attribute queries revealed that over 50% of the schools lacked basic amenities such as water and electricity. Furthermore over 75% had neither computer nor library facilities.
This study demonstrated that the capability of GIS to combine spatial and attribute data makes this innovative tool viable for managing/monitoring various stages of school development and distribution of educational facilities within this local community
