Abstract
Five Engagement Techniques To Energize Your GIS Teaching
Track: Teaching About GIS for Future Professionals
Authors: Adena Schutzberg
Students learn best when they are challenged and engaged. The traditional GIS course might pair a lecture or two per week with lab hours focused on an assignment or project. But that's just one strategy for teaching and learning. This session introduces five engagement strategies that have been used in GIS and geography courses with success. Attendees are invited to steal, redefine, and twist these techniques to serve their students' needs and apply them to informal, residence and online education environments.
The session will describe the five strategies (1) critique, (2) use "new" software, (3)teach yourself, (4) vote and discuss, and (5) reflect, and provide a range of ways to apply them to different GIS topics and learning situations.
