Abstract
Project BudBurst and FieldScope: Prototyping Continental-Scale Citizen-Science Data Visualization Tools
Track: Teaching with GIS Across the Curriculum
Authors: Dennis Ward
NEON's Project BudBurst is collaborating with National Geographic FieldScope to create a set of data visualization tools to determine if citizen scientists and the informal education community can perform data analysis to answer relevant research questions such as: "What is the geographic pattern of the onset of phenological events?" and "Can growing degree days be used to model phenological events?"
To facilitate the exploration of phenological events, an Esri-based online GIS tool was developed to provide an intuitive way of observing patterns such as green-up and brown-down. Another tool will allow the user to evaluate plant growth models based on growing-degree-day calculations, in addition guiding citizen scientists through simple model creation and evaluation.
The ongoing collaboration between Project BudBurst and NGS FieldScope will result in the creation of a suite of prototype data visualization and analysis tools for use by citizen scientists and the informal education communities.
