Abstract
College level Introduction to Geospatial Technology for High School Students
Track: Teaching About GIS for Future Professionals
Authors: Marc Epstein
Since 1992 the challenge of how to bring geospatial technology to the high school curriculum has been answered with resources in professional development and informal education programs. Beginning in 2006 delivery of geospatial technology education has been a major goal of the Environmental Career Preparation Program in partnership with the California Community Colleges Environmental Training Centers. As a result of the various experiences, in fall of 2011 a new course was initiated entitled Introduction to Geospatial Technology which meets the criteria for the one unit Shasta College Survey of Digital Mapping. The course is being taught at two high school environmental thematic career academies as a hybrid format incorporated into the career technical education class for sophomores. The hybrid format includes class time, non class time, and on-line instruction. Lessons learned from the first year of this experience will be presented as a model to meet geospatial technology education needs.
