Abstract
Academic Lessons in GeoDesign
Track: Teaching with GIS Across the Curriculum
Authors: Karen Hanna, Beth Scott
GeoDesign requires one to follow an intentional analysis and design process. Many design offices are working to adapt their traditional work-flows to this new digital realm, while academic settings have become good testing grounds for them. Two university professors will review several student projects that use a variety of approaches to GeoDesign. Elizabeth Scott from University of Arizona and Karen Hanna from Cal Poly Pomona will share graduate student projects that use ESRI's ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and 3D Analyst, as well as related geospatial technologies to develop sophisticated solutions to rural and urban issues. Issues include watershed protection, habitat restoration, fire management, the wildland urban interface (WUI), recreation for underserved areas, urban agriculture, visualizing urban growth and more. The student projects use a variety of approaches, offering examples to many types of users for implementing GeoDesign in their practice.
