ESRI established the ArcGIS Online for Education grant program to promote exemplary educational uses of the ArcGIS Online for Organizations platform. Exemplary uses involve hundreds or thousands of students per year; promote active learning, geographic awareness and spatial thinking; create and/or employ open educational resources such as data, maps, applications, and assignments that are freely available to and reusable by students and educators worldwide; and/or deploy ArcGIS Online as a campus-wide commons for sharing geospatial resources. At Southwestern College, we are creating unique ArcGIS Online projects to be utilized by students within a variety of GE courses at Southwestern College, including Physical Geography, Geography of California, Cultural Geography, World Regional Geography, and Earth Science. These disciplines are popular general education courses on campus, serving nearly 2000 students annually. The ArcGIS online assignments provide a powerful tool for students to develop and strengthen their geographic awareness and spatial thinking skills.
