Future of Academic GIS Services
Track: Teaching with GIS Across the Curriculum

GIS services in academic settings have different considerations than most other enterprise GIS communities. Academic institutions like New York University have support models aligned toward fostering spatial research and teaching at the university, many of which require support from two integral partners - Information Technology departments and Libraries. Academic GIS support services have the added responsibility of supporting the entire life-cycle of spatial data, including identifying and acquiring data, educating users on good metadata practices, and building infrastructure for data discovery and delivery. This paper will examine some of the challenges on the horizon for academic GIS support and explore the ways that NYU has attempted to plan our services with these in mind.
