Training in cartographic design and visualization is essential for students' careers in mapping and GIS industries, in response to the prevalence of geospatial communications worldwide. Concurrently, the demand for online teaching has been increasing in higher education. This presentation discusses the development of an intermediate-level cartography course delivered online, which heavily involves cartographic training through asynchronous communications. To acquire enough knowledge and skill to make professional maps, students do sequentially-designed exercises and a final project using up-to-date, real-world GIS data. On each of their maps, students receive feedback and advice from both instructors and classmates via online meetings, peer review, and rubrics. Finally, for instructors, this presentation summarizes the pedagogical perspective and technical support necessary to successfully deliver an online cartography course.
