We have conducted a multi-year video-based study of students in the Geospatial Semester program at James Madison University. These students participate in a semester- or year-long course with a substantial locally-focused GIS project. We've interviewed participating students and a control group and we've coded the videos to examine the evolution of students' use of spatial language (as a proxy for spatial thinking). We'll present the latest results of this study and discuss the implications of our findings.
