Abstract
Creating a Statewide 4-H/Youth GIS Contest
Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: Timothy Prather, Ty Petty
The Tennessee 4-H GIS Contest is a collaborative effort of the University of Tennessee Extension and Tennessee Geographic Information Council (TNGIC), the statewide GIS Users Group. The contest provides a venue for participating youth to demonstrate their knowledge of GIS and their cartographic skills, and is the selection process to nominated youth to the National 4-H GIS Leadership Team and a award trip to participate in the Team's GIS activities at the Esri EdUC. The contest emulates the Tennessee 4-H Roundup state contests for other projects by requiring a written report describing the project and what was learned, a videotaped interview and a copy of the map produced through the service learning project. All entries are submitted electronically for judging so that groups are not required to miss up to three days of school and incur significant travel costs to participate. Results are announced at the TNGIC Annual Conference.
