Abstract
Enriching Science through Geotechnology
Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: Erika Klose
Geotechnologies are increasingly being used in classrooms in the state of West Virginia, through a state-wide K-12 license through ESRI. While GIS and other geotechnologies most easily lend themselves to geography and the environmental sciences, they are also a powerful teaching tool in other disciplines. With the advent of the Next Generation Science Standards, and the practices for K12 science classrooms, geotechnologies are a perfect tool for teachers to use in facilitating the implementation of practices such as asking questions and defining problems; developing and using models; planning and carrying out investigations; etc. (National Research Council, 2012). This presentation will include a series of lessons designed to teach core science knowledge with a geospatial slant.
