GIS Services in Academic Libraries, Opportunities and Challenges
Track: User Presentations - Research

It is expected that GIS services in academic libraries can bring geospatial technology in various disciplines to support research, teaching and outreach. These services include geospatial data solution, collaboration and technical support, geoinformation instruction, and outreach activities. The recent development of GIS technology, such as web-GIS, mobile GIS, and different GIS APIs, provides a lot of opportunities to improve these existing services. These new development allows GIS at the libraries to offer a more user-friendly environment for existing GIS users, as well as attract new users. However, challenges also exist including increased spatial data demands, GIS instruction reconfiguration, and exploring better user interactions. This paper will review the GIS services in academic libraries, talk about the opportunities and challenges as technology development.
