Most introductory GIS classes include some type of final project that reinforces the geospatial concepts learned over the semester. The objective of this study was to develop best practices for final projects. A survey of introductory GIS classes at more than 50 major universities was conducted to summarize the scope and content of the final project, as well as percent of final grade, required GIS/GPS skills, location of data, length of time to complete, and final format (ie. oral presentation, poster board, written report). In addition, a survey of 100 past and present GIS students at the University of Tennessee was conducted to ascertain their improvements in GIS competency after completion of the final project.
