Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is one of the fastest-growing research trends at New York University (NYU). Though NYU is one of the largest research universities in US, it has no geography or GIS related program. GIS outreach, then, is a major challenge at NYU. This paper will discuss evolution of Data Services (formerly known as Data Service Studio) in regards to the need of supporting GIS services and fostering a sense of community for GIS users at NYU. We will further explain the outreach methods that Data Services deployed since its inception, followed by a discussion on trends, challenges and opportunities for upcoming academic GIS support at NYU.
