Yukon, Oklahoma is similar to many towns throughout the state of Oklahoma as well as many communities that are located along Route 66. Historically, Yukon prospered significantly because of its relationship to Route 66. However, in the past few years the city has seen a steep decline in businesses and opportunities along Route 66 as much of the commercial growth has transitioned closer to the main arterial connector between downtown Yukon and I-40. Students and faculty in the Divisions of Landscape Architecture and Architecture at the University of Oklahoma utilized Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assist the City of Yukon in understanding their future opportunities. GIS enabled the design team to perform analysis to understand why businesses were moving away from downtown. Additionally, using geodesign principles the design team was able to show the community how they could revive their downtown while simultaneously creating vibrant, exciting, and economically sustainable districts.
