Abstract
Generalized World Maps: How Do We Make Them Memorable?
Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: Terence Day
Physical geography textbooks provide many examples of sophisticated maps that show global phenomena, such as climate and soils. However, for introductory undergraduate students, many of these maps are neither readily understandable nor memorable. In order to address this issue a project at Okanagan College is producing generalized maps of global phenomena. The maps are intended to be accurate, understandable and memorable. Much of the data is obtainable through ArcGIS online and is easily processed in ArcGIS 10. There will be opportunities for participation in evaluation of the maps and techniques used to generate them. Detailed instructions will be provided in the session to assist interested instructors to pursue this initiative.
