Authors: juna papajorgji
The University of Florida has developed a prototype course that introduces GIS to middle-school students in Albania. The course is based on themes of green resources and sustainable planning. Part of the course uses ESRI's online resources. All data, projects, course materials, and students' products, are uploaded to ESRI's online resources. The course was taught in Tirana, in June of 2012. It culminated with the development of the first Green Map for Tirana, and an open letter to the Mayor by the children.
Partners in Albania included the "Martin and Mirash Ivanaj" foundation, The Albanian Ministry of Science and Education, the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe, and the National Albanian American Council.
Other partners included the GISCorps, the Green Mapping System, the Mediterranean Association for the Protection of the Sea Turtles (MEDASSET), and "My Community, Our Earth" - a program of the Association of American Geographers.
