Abstract
Problems as Possibilities: Integrating ArcGIS Online Into Your Curriculum
Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: Steve Borders
As the developed world moves towards knowledge-based industries, new pedagogical practices are essential. Traditional teacher-centered dissemination is being replaced by guiding students in the creation of knowledge and skills demanded by employers. The Student Consulting Center at GVSU is a faculty led program to providing students and nonprofits the opportunity to work together in solving real-life challenges. Using ArcGIS online, student consultants created and embedded maps in a website for a community foundation in Fremont, Michigan as part of a strategic planning process. Analyzing key indicators from the US Census, students identified key socioeconomic trends while comparing the county to state and national benchmarks. Using ESRI story maps, consultants identified tracts within the county to convey findings and recommendations for targeted interventions. Attendees will learn how ArcGIS online can assist educators in developing the skills and expertise required of future leaders while bridging the gap between research and practice.
