A group of researchers explored new ways of teaching GIS by using a pop culture phenomenon - Zombies!
But how can we relate these concepts and its applications with fantasy and fictional themes, such as Zombies?! How can modelling a zombie apocalypse could contribute to learning geospatial tools and technologies? In many ways, these questions are similar to questions we might ask of a wide range of spatial phenomena.
There were produced several maps by using and combining ArcGIS for Desktop analysis and geoprocessing tools, extensions, and also the Model Builder, by designing and preparing several geospatial models. We developed a WebGIS application (ArcGIS Explorer Online), and a mobile application (ArcGIS for Mobile), that allow users to explore the created geospatial information, to help people to escape a hypothetical zombie-apocalypse! We also developed an Augmented Reality Application, based on Layar, in which the participants had to hunt zombies through Lisbon.
