Abstract
Rockin' the NGSS with Rockfish Habitat Suitability Models
Track: Teaching and Research
Authors: Dominique Evans-Bye
Students created habitat suitability models for mid to deep water rockfish species using remote sensing data and the Benthic Terrain Modeler in ArcGIS. Rockfish suffer from barotrauma when brought up from depth, so students engineered descending devices to recompress fish during release to ensure survivability. Habitat models and descending devices were ground-truthed in the field. Safe release was recorded using an ROV. Insects were introduced as an alternative protein source to overfishing.
