In this talk, we report on the curricular design of a new course at UW-Madison merging graphic and web design for cartography. Rather than introducing and enforcing design principles, lecture modules explain them from the perspectives of perception, cognition, and culture. Rather than teaching tools, lab modules teach design workflow and require students to integrate GIS, graphic design, and web technologies. We discuss course sequence and scope, as well as feedback from a student survey.
