Thanks to widely available and easy to use web GIS tools, thinking spatially and using practical GIS skills have expanded into every discipline of higher education. This will give graduate professional students studying GIS the opportunity (rather need) to learn higher-level skills. GIS development practicums, as part of professional degree programs is one approach to this new paradigm. We give examples of practicums that focus on creating tools rather than synthesizing knowledge.
