ACHE's Use of GIS Supports Executive Healthcare Network Formation
Author(s): Ross Capaccio, röös design + consulting

The Chicago-based American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) is the nation's leading professional association for health care executives with approximately 29,700 U.S. members in which hospital CEOs make up 50 percent of its membership. ACHE's long-term goal is to form a network of chapters from existing Healthcare Executive Groups (HEG) and Women's Healthcare Executive Networks (WHEN) nationwide. ACHE's Board of Governors in November 2001 formalized its plans for developing the network, implementing the "Partners for Success" Chapter Development Project-a master plan to convert existing HEG and WHEN into chartered ACHE chapters. The ACHE requires each group to prepare a territory boundary analysis to decide if its desired market area is unique and does not overlap other jurisdictions. Performing the territory analysis required using many ArcGIS geoprocessing tools. In GIS lingo, this study looked at issues relating to access, allocation, proximity, adjacency, and containment spatial parameters. The territory analysis required mapping existing affiliate group boundaries to identify territory overlap and to eventually map new market area territories.
